The mosque is recorded as having been built in 1750. Arabic sources give the Hijri year 1164, corresponding to 1750–1751. It was built by order of Imam al-Mahdi Abbas ibn al-Mansur. After the Imam's death he was buried in the building, which is why the mosque is known for its domed tomb.
