The mosque was built in 1797, during the rule of Bey Muhammad al-Kabir, on the orders of Baba Hassan, Pasha of Algiers. According to the Arabic source, it was built to commemorate the expulsion of the Spanish from the region.
During the French conquest, in 1830, French soldiers occupied the building and used it as living quarters. In 1835 it was re-established as a mosque, and it was renovated about three decades later. In 1952 it was added to the list of historic monuments. According to the Arabic source, it has been closed to the public since 2010.
