The mosque is recorded as having been built in 1913. An Arabic-language source states that it was commissioned by Sultan Idris Murshidul Azam Shah of Perak. According to that account, the sultan had vowed to build a great mosque if he recovered from an illness, and after he recovered he fulfilled the vow.
