Mecca Masjid is a historic mosque in the Old City of Hyderabad, in the Indian state of Telangana. It is counted among the oldest and largest mosques in India. Built in the Indo-Islamic architectural tradition, it stands close to landmarks such as the Charminar, the Laad Bazaar and the Chowmahalla Palace. Our records give its capacity as about 20,000 worshippers. According to tradition, its name comes from soil brought from Mecca that was used in the construction of the central arch.

The mosque was commissioned by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, and it formed the axis of his urban plan for the city of Hyderabad.
According to tradition, soil brought from Mecca was used to build the central arch, and the mosque took its name from this. Our records list 1694 as the year of construction.
