The Pink Mosque stands in the Novo-Tatarskaya Sloboda (New Tatar Quarter) of Kazan's Vakhitovsky district. Its Tatar name is "Al mäçet", and it takes its name from the colour of its walls. Sources also know it as the Tenth Cathedral Mosque, the Mosque by the Tatar Cemetery, the Low Bukharan Mosque and the Green Mosque. It acquired its present appearance in a reconstruction of 1905–1906 carried out in an eclectic style; the architect is unknown. The building is protected as a regional cultural heritage site. Since 1998 it has been assigned to the madrasa named for the 1000th anniversary of the adoption of Islam. The Vakhitovo railway station lies about three hundred metres away.

The first building was erected in 1808 with funds from M. I. Apanaev. In 1905–1906 the mosque was reconstructed in an eclectic style, financed by the merchant Mukhammed-Sadyk Galikeev. It was closed in 1931. From 1998 the building of the former mosque was handed over to the madrasa named for the 1000th anniversary of the adoption of Islam.
