Its name means “the honoured house.” According to our records, it was designed by Abdulhusein M. Thariani in the Islamic architectural tradition. The mosque is described as the largest in Bangladesh. History

This text was compiled from sourced information with AI assistance and has not yet been reviewed by an editor. Please report any errors.

In the late 1950s Dhaka was growing rapidly as the capital of East Pakistan, and the idea of a large, centrally located mosque emerged. The Baitul Mukarram Mosque Society was founded in 1959. A site was chosen on the edge of the old town, where it meets the newer part of Dhaka. Construction began on 27 January 1960. Our records give 1968 as the year of completion.

The mosque originally held around 30,000 worshippers. Because of persistent overcrowding, particularly during Ramadan, the Bangladeshi government added extensions. These raised the capacity to at least 40,000.
