History

According to tradition, the building originally served as a Sasanian fire temple before the coming of Islam. This account is passed down as tradition rather than as a documented fact.
In the 1980s the mosque was bombed by Iraqi aircraft, and it has also suffered damage from rain and earthquakes. The 2006 Borujerd earthquake destroyed its minarets and caused severe damage to the structure. It nonetheless remains a tourist site in Lorestan and western Iran.
