The El-Mursi Abul Abbas Mosque stands in Alexandria, Egypt, and contains the tomb of Abu l-Abbas al-Mursi, who was born in Murcia in 1219 and died in Alexandria in 1286. It is one of the main landmarks of the Abu al-Abbas area in the city's Bahari district and is recognised by its distinctively shaped domes. Locals often call it "Jami' al-Mursi Abu al-Abbas". It is described as one of the oldest and best-known mosques of Alexandria. The present structure was designed by the Italian architects Eugenio Valzania and Mario Rossi.

History

This text was compiled from sourced information with AI assistance and has not yet been reviewed by an editor. Please report any errors.

The first mosque, dated 1307 in our record, was built beside al-Mursi's tomb by a wealthy merchant of Alexandria.

In 1927 the Ministry of Religious Endowments decided to demolish the old mosque and replace it with a new one. Construction of the new building, to the designs of Eugenio Valzania and Mario Rossi, began in 1929 and was completed in 1945.

From Wikipedia

The Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque (Arabic: جامع أبو العباس المرسي, romanized: Jami' Abu al-'Abbas al-Mursi) is a mosque, mausoleum, and Sufi shrine, located in the Anfoushi neighbourhood of Alexandria, on the north coast of Egypt. The 13th-century mosque is named in honour of Abu'l Abbas al-Mursi, a 13th-century mystic, who is also buried in the same place along with members of the Ashraf family.

The mosque is located adjacent to both the Al-Busiri Mosque and the Sidi Yaqut Al-Arsh Mosque, and all three mosques facing the same central sahn.
