According to the inscription above the entrance, Ahmad ibn al-Saffah al-Shafi'i founded the building as a mosque and madrasa and endowed it as a waqf in Rajab 828 AH, corresponding to 1425 CE. The endowment required its imam and preacher to follow the Shafi'i school. The inscription also places the foundation in the days of al-Malik al-Ashraf.
The sources state that it was built over the remains of an earlier installation on the site, described as an oil press or a mill. The mosque was restored in 1343 AH (1925 CE).
