The Great Mosque of Kano is the central mosque of Kano, the second most populous city in Nigeria. It stands in the eastern inner city, next to the Emir's palace on Kofar Mata Road. It is counted among the largest mosques in Nigeria, and for Friday prayer it is said to draw up to 50,000 worshippers, many of whom pray in the surrounding grounds because there is no room inside. The present building has a green main dome and two minarets.

History

According to the Kano Chronicle, the first great mosque was built in the 15th century by Muhammad Rumfa on the site of a sacred tree. It is also possible that a smaller mosque from the 14th century stood there earlier.

In 1582 Muhammad Zaki had the mosque relocated to another site. Because of its dilapidated condition, it was rebuilt between 1855 and 1883 by Abdullahi dan Dabo. The mosque was demolished in the 1950s, and in 1963 the British colonial administration supported the construction of the present building.
