Design and construction of the mosque began in 1932 and continued until 1982, a span of roughly fifty years. The work was carried out under the patronage of Sayyid Abdul Hamid (Kamboh), who is reported to have persisted through many difficulties so that the building would become a landmark of Pakistan.
The mosque received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1986. A stamp showing the mosque was issued in Pakistan on 12 May 2004.
