The Great Mosque of Hama stands in the Syrian city of Hama, roughly 400 metres west of the citadel. It is also known locally as al-Jāmiʿ al-Kabīr. Arabic sources count it among the notable historic monuments of the city and note that the site preserves traces of three successive traditions: paganism, Christianity and Islam. The mosque dates to the 8th century CE. It was largely destroyed during the 1982 Hama massacre and was subsequently rebuilt.

The mosque was built in the 8th century CE. According to Arabic sources, the site bears marks of pagan, Christian and then Islamic use. In 1982, during the Hama massacre, the building was largely destroyed; it was afterwards rebuilt.
