The mosque was built between 1611 and 1614 under the Mughal emperor Jahangir; our record gives 1614 as the year of construction. It is associated with the empress Mariam-uz-Zamani, consort of Akbar and mother of Jahangir.

In a later period, during the time of Ranjit Singh, the building was used as a gunpowder factory and became known as Barud Khana. In 1850 it was returned to the Muslims of Lahore, who contributed to its restoration.
