The four-storey building has a capacity of 1,500 worshippers, and the complex also includes a cultural centre and an information and meeting centre. The mosque takes its name from the adjoining historic Turkish cemetery; in this name, the Turkish word şehitlik is used in the sense of cemetery.

The Turkish cemetery from which the mosque takes its name was laid out in 1866 as a diplomatic cemetery. The present mosque was built between 1999 and 2005 by DITIB, on the site of an earlier building that served the same purpose. It was completed in 2005.
