The mosque was built in 1573, as attested by stone and marble tablets set into its wall. It was founded by Sidi Saiyyed (also given as Sidi Sayyid). The sources mention that the Abyssinians, known as Sidis, belonged to the retinue of Bilal Jhajar Khan, a general in the army of the Gujarat Sultanate. The period corresponds to the reign of Sultan Shams al-Din Muzaffar Shah.
