The Great Mosque of Birecik is located in the Merkez neighbourhood of Birecik, a district of Şanlıurfa Province. Its damaged inscription indicates that it was commissioned in 1365 by the Mamluk Sultan al-Ashraf Sha'ban. Some researchers, however, have assigned the building to an earlier period, the 12th century.

The mosque's inscription is now damaged. According to what can be understood from it, the building was commissioned in 1365 by the Mamluk Sultan al-Ashraf Sha'ban.
Some researchers have claimed that the mosque was built in the 12th century, but the date derived from the inscription differs from this view.
