According to the available accounts, Muslims from Kashmir came to Nepal for trade during the reign of King Ratna Malla, and the mosque was built in the time of King Pratap Malla. It was renovated several times over the years.
Unrest in Kashmir later brought further Kashmiri families to Kathmandu. The present mosque building dates from the reign of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, after the Muslims had helped him by gathering intelligence on the Malla rulers.
