The mosque was first erected in the late 18th century. It was enlarged and largely rebuilt under King Zahir Shah in the 1960s. It suffered damage during the fighting of the 1990s and had been fully restored by 2019.

Many people in Kabul assert that for a number of years in the early 20th century the mosque's imam was an Englishman who had converted to Islam and who returned to England after leaving the post. This is reported as a popular account rather than a documented fact.
