Sources attribute the founding of the mosque to the Abbasid caliph al-Nasir li-Din Allah in the late 12th century, around 1192–1193 CE. The Arabic Wikipedia gives the date as 589 AH (1193 CE), noting that several historical sources support it and that the historian Imad Abd al-Salam Rauf confirms it. English-language sources say only that the mosque was "said to be" first founded in 1193.
During the Royal Era in Iraq, the mosque was where the country's kings prayed, and it was consequently nicknamed "King Ghazi Mosque".
