Masjid Dearborn

Dearborn Mosque is a mosque in Dearborn, Michigan, belonging to the American Moslem Society. It is described as the central congregational mosque of the city. The building is three stories high and occupies almost an entire city block at the corner of Vernor and Dix Streets. Our records give its capacity as 2,000 worshippers and its address as 10000 West Vernor Highway. It should not be confused with the Islamic Center of America, which is also in Dearborn.

The mosque was built by the city's early Muslim community, at that time mostly Sunni Muslims from the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. It is noted as only the second mosque constructed in the United States.

Attendance grew quickly from the 1960s through the 1980s. In the early 1980s the mosque obtained a court order allowing it to broadcast the call to prayer by loudspeaker despite objections from some neighbors, reportedly the first mosque in America to do so. The court treated the call to prayer as the Muslim equivalent of church bells.
