Fort Mosque

The Fort Mosque, also called the Castle Mosque, is a ruined mosque standing within the walls of the fortress that dominates the hill above Lezhë in northern Albania. Built in the Ottoman architectural tradition, it is protected as a Cultural Monument of Albania. The building was roughly square in plan and covered by a dome, and most of its outer walls still stand. It measures about nine by seven and a half metres, and its mihrab rises to around three and a half metres.

The castle hill, 172 metres high, was fortified in the sixth century BC and later served as the city's acropolis. Venetian Albania used the castle from 1393. After the Ottomans took Lezhë in 1478, the fortress was enlarged and turned into a military citadel in the sixteenth century, during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. The mosque dates from this period and was most likely built in 1522.
