The Shah Mosque is one of the historic mosques of Tehran and is counted among the city's prominent congregational mosques. It stands in the northern section of the Grand Bazaar. Built in the Qajar architectural tradition, it was constructed in the Qajar period on the orders of Fath Ali Shah. It was formerly known as the Soltani ("royal") Mosque, and after the Islamic Revolution in Iran its name was changed to the Imam Mosque (Emam Mosque); both names remain in use. The building has been on the Iran National Heritage List since 1984.

According to the record, the mosque was built in 1809. Its construction was ordered by the Qajar ruler Fath Ali Shah, and Nasir al-Din Shah is also listed among its patrons. At one stage it was known as the Soltani Mosque.
The best-known event associated with the mosque is the assassination of Iranian Prime Minister Haj Ali Razmara, carried out inside it by a member of the Fada'iyan-e Islam society on 7 March 1951 (29 Jumada al-Awwal 1370 AH).
Shortly after the success of the Islamic Revolution, the mosque's name was changed from "Shah Mosque" to "Imam Mosque". It was added to the Iran National Heritage List on 23 September 1984 and is administered by the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization of Iran.
