The Ibn 'Arabi Mosque stands in the Salihiyya area of Damascus, in the Sheikh Muhyiddin neighbourhood on the banks of the Yazid River, in a locality known as Abu Jarash. Arabic sources also call it the Khankar Mosque or the Selimi Mosque, and in Turkish it is known as the Selimiye Tekkesi Camii. The mosque belongs to a complex that grew up around the tomb of Muhyiddin Ibn 'Arabi and also includes the mausoleum, a soup kitchen (imaret) and a Sufi lodge (zawiya). The mosque sits immediately beside the tomb. The ensemble is referred to as the Selimiye Complex of Damascus or the Sheikh Muhyiddin Ibn 'Arabi Complex.

According to the available sources, the complex was commissioned by the Ottoman Sultan Selim I, known as Yavuz, in the Salihiyya district of Damascus on his return from the Egyptian campaign. It was built over the grave of Muhyiddin Ibn 'Arabi and comprises the tomb, the adjoining mosque, the imaret and the zawiya. The name Selimiye derives from its patron.
