The mosque was built by Bey Hasan ibn Husayn, nicknamed Abu Hanak, who governed Constantine from 1149 to 1168 AH (1736 to 1754 CE). According to the marble inscription above the door of the prayer hall, construction took place in 1156 AH (1743 CE). A madrasa was built beside it.

Around eight teachers gave lessons at the mosque. The last scholar to revive the tradition of teaching there was Abdelhamid ibn Badis.
