The church was built in the upper town of Monemvasia and was first dedicated to Panagia Hodegetria. The Venetians, who held the town for a period, used it as a Catholic church dedicated to the Madonna.

During the Ottoman period the building was converted into a mosque. It was returned to Christian worship when Greece became independent in the early nineteenth century.
