Editorial policy
Here we explain how the information in the atlas is compiled, verified and corrected.
Esta página aún no está disponible en su idioma; a continuación se muestra la versión en inglés.
Accuracy and sources
Each record is based, as far as possible, on reliable sources: endowment (waqf) and religious-affairs records, publications of museums and cultural institutions, academic studies, inscriptions and on-site observation.
Sources are kept with the record and shown on the page. We try to verify unsourced information before publishing it; what cannot be verified is either not published or clearly marked.
Dates, periods and tradition
- Where the exact date is unknown, “approximately” or the century is used.
- Hijri and Gregorian dates may be given together; translations follow the date as written in the source.
- For buildings converted into mosques, the original use and the date of conversion are stated separately.
- Stories told locally are kept under the “Story” heading, separate from documented history.
Reviewing contributions
Every record and photo sent by users is reviewed by editors before publication. During review, the location is checked against maps and satellite imagery, the information against sources, and we check whether the mosque is already in the atlas.
For incomplete submissions or those needing changes, a note is left for the contributor. Publication decisions rest with the editors.
Corrections policy
Error reports are reviewed with priority. Verified corrections are applied to the record and its “last verified” information is updated. If the reporter left an email address, we get back to them when needed.
Photo policy
- Only photos taken by the contributor or shared with permission are accepted; the contributor confirms this when submitting.
- Photos credit the contributor by name. Requests from people stating they hold the rights are reviewed and the photo is removed if necessary.
- Images that focus on the faces of worshippers, harm privacy, carry watermarks or contain advertising are not published.
- Photos are resized so the site loads faster; the original file is kept.
AI assistance
For records with little information, short descriptions, overviews and histories may be drafted with AI assistance (Claude). The AI is given only the verified information in the record and source texts; it may not add dates, people or events that are not in the sources, and source texts are not copied verbatim.
No draft is published until an editor has read and corrected it. Texts prepared this way carry a note saying they were compiled with AI assistance.
Languages and translation
Turkish, English and Arabic texts are prepared by editors. German, French, Spanish, Russian, Indonesian, Urdu and Persian texts are machine-translated and marked “machine translation” on the page. Editors review these translations over time.
Impartiality
The atlas aims to present information without regard to sect, politics or commercial interest. The religious and historical significance of buildings is respected; on disputed topics, different views are given with their sources.
