The bishopric of Egitânia was established in the 4th century, and work on the basilica is reported to have begun around the year 585.
During the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula the building was converted into a mosque. With the Reconquista it returned to the Catholic Church and was donated to the Templars.
It stopped functioning as a place of worship in the 19th century and today houses a museum.
