The Tablighi Jamaat was started by Muhammad Ilyas Kandhlawi in 1926, and the Nizamuddin Markaz Mosque is regarded as the place where the movement began. Since 2015 the congregation has been led by his great-grandson, Ameer Muhammad Saad Kandhlawi. From that year, disagreements over the leadership of the organisation emerged within the movement; the mosque nevertheless remains the headquarters of its Nizamuddin branch.
