According to the available sources, the mosque began as a small place of prayer on Djerba. It was square, with sides of three and a half metres. Its construction is attributed to Sheikh Lakin in the middle of the 3rd century AH.
As the local population grew, the building became too small for the worshippers. In 601 AH, scholars of the Bani Abi Zayd al-Masfuri family enlarged it by about two-thirds.
