According to an inscription on the mihrab, the mosque was built by Mir Hindu Beg, one of Babur's generals, on 6 December 1526, on Babur's orders.
The building was completed about seven months after the Battle of Panipat, in which Babur took Delhi from Ibrahim Lodi.
The mosque was later placed among the monuments protected under the Ancient Monuments Protection Act of 1904.
